Kennel Cough Vaccinations – A vaccine your dog only needs when kennel boarding right? Couldn’t be further from the truth…….

So over the years of working in the industry, we have all been privy to those infamous phone calls. “My Dog is going into kennels soon and they have said I need to have his kennel cough vaccinations up to date so would like to book him in”. But why the lack of all year round protection?

Kennel Cough or as we would prefer to call it “Contagious Canine Cough” can itself have many causes similar to that of the human cold. The most common cause of the condition is a bacteria called Bordetella Bronchiseptica.

A dogs respiratory tract is normally covered in a mucous that traps infectious bacterial or viral particles but when this protection becomes weakened, the dog can more easily contract Contagious Canine Cough. There are several different elements that can cause the weakening of this mucous lining, especially if the immune system is fragile. Elements such as cold temperatures, crowded or poorly ventilated conditions, excessive dust or smoke inhalation and even stress.

Once contracted, Contagious Canine Cough as the name suggests, is highly contagious and can be spread very easily whether this be a trip to the park, the groomers, dog training classes, vet visits or even saying hello to the neighbours pooch. Of course, boarding at kennels is a perfect location for the condition to spread which is likely where the name has been taken, but as you can see Contagious Canine Cough can be picked up pretty much anywhere.

So what are the symptoms? We would suggest most owners could detect the sound of Contagious Canine Cough as it carries that distinctive “honking” noise. It is a forceful sounding cough and one which is extremely persistent. Other common symptoms which join the honking cough may be sneezing, along with watery eyes and a runny nose.

Protection vs Treatment
Of course, we consider this a no brainer. With a simple annual vaccination you could give your furry friend all the protection they require against Contagious Canine Cough. In unprotected dogs that become affected, the symptoms can be eased by your local veterinarian. However, not only does your beloved friend suffer at the onset of symptoms, but with antibiotics, cough suppressants and anti-inflammatories all a possible necessity…..your wallet could end up suffering too. Young puppies, elderly patients or dogs with underlying conditions may also be at higher risk from the symptoms and in some cases pneumonia can develop as a result.

It seems Kennel Cough or Contagious Canine Cough, which ever you choose to call it, may be one of the most misunderstood diseases but we hope that through good education we may be about to change that.
